Walked into a flower shop today. It’s the first day of spring and it’s cold outside. Seemed fitting.

West Coast lawmakers seek millions for earthquake warning system

Mexico has had an early earthquake warning system for over 20 years. Similar systems give 30-120 seconds advanced warning in Japan, Turkey, China and Taiwan, with TV alerts, sirens, and smartphone alerts. That might not seem like a lot of time, but then think about how long it takes to turn off your gas stove. Think about stepping out of the stacks at McHenry. And if you’re me, and require about 30 seconds to process that “shit the building’s shaking oh cool earthquake” means “duck and cover”, then you’d have just enough time to not be grinning stupidly in the middle of the room while the roof falls on your head. (Sidenote: in the event of a major earthquake, I will be so excited that I’ll definitely just stand there grinning until I’m crushed to death by the ceiling coming down.)

The US Congress hasn’t decided to fund the development of such a system in California, and California has ruled that state funds cannot be used to pay for it. This is super dumb. This system would literally pay for itself many times over in the event of a major quake. Let’s not be naive and pretend like there’s never going to be a major earthquake on the west coast. We’ve got the San Andreas fault system spanning pretty much the entire width of the state from Mendocino to Mexico. Earthquakes are our specialty.

A prototype system is in operation in LA and the SF Bay area and was successful in forewarning the March 28th 5.1 earthquake in the LA area. Several other countries have functional and highly effective early warning systems in place. This isn’t a gamble on experimental technology, this is a proven warning system that we can’t be bothered to install.

Yeah, nobody likes dealing with their smoke detector. They’re a hassle and they suck but you fucking have one anyway. You buy one, you install it, you put batteries in it when it fucking beeps at you, and when you need it you’re really damn glad you went to the trouble. Not having an early warning system when the technology is proven and available is reckless beyond belief. Do we really need to wait until it’s too late to put in a damn warning system?
